Arts and the Aquarium

It’s been a great couple of weeks in Chattanooga. We went up to Point Park to get (sort of) a nice view of the city. The clouds did eventually clear so we could see the Tennessee River, Moccasin Bend, and downtown. This is also one of the many important civil war battle sites in the city.

I had this past week off work and explored the city a bit more. First stop the aquarium. They have a pretty incredible collection of freshwater fish. The rivers in the Chattanooga area have the highest biodiversity of river fish in North America due to the unique combination of rain (so much!) and runoff from the surrounding mountains. The aquarium is split into two separate buildings for the freshwater and salt water fish and also includes a river otter exhibit and butterfly pavilion.

I also had a chance to visit the Hunter Museum of American Art and the current exhibit of Stuart Weitzman’s shoe collection.

The building itself is so cool. It’s a combination of the Hunter family mansion where the art museum began, an East wing in the brutalist style that was added in the 70s (where the permanent collection is displayed), and a modern West wing added in 2005 (where current exhibits are hosted).

We went on one cool little hike this weekend too up to Stringers Ridge and also stopped by the opening night of the Riverfront Nights music festival. You can see the aquarium in the background.

Lots to do here in The Scenic City!
