Every spring Valencia has a massive celebration from March 1 to 19 called Fallas. This weekend we hit peak celebration with local parades and music and near constant fireworks. I have been consistently impressed by how good our local band and really all of the bands sound!

The most notable part of the festival, aside from the fireworks, are the monuments placed throughout the squares of Valencia. It has been so cool to watch them being installed.

They are usually meant to be funny or satirical and often include political messages or commentary. They are almost all incredibly beautiful and some of them are enormous.

The final day of Fallas is the crema, or burning of the installations, which is one of the reasons why they often include political figures. Our local falla includes a casual Hitler reference, which I suppose is a pretty safe choice when it comes to burning effigies.

A few of these sculptures are truly enormous so I’m not quite sure if the burning is more like a ceremonial act with fireworks or if they truly burn them down.

I’m excited to find out in a couple of days and I will certainly post an update!
