Sicily

This weekend we headed to Sicily to visit Chris’s cousin Rob who is stationed at the US Naval base outside Catania. We stayed right in the middle of Catania near the Piazza del Duomo and the ruins of a Roman colosseum.

We were also right around the corner from an ancient Greek amphitheater. It was pretty incredible to see how modern day stadiums still follow this design that was perfected by the Greeks so many centuries ago.

Rob also took us to visit the Valley of the Temples on the other side of Sicily near Agrigento, where there are some of the best preserved temples outside of Rome and Greece.

We tried to visit Mt Etna as well but had to turn around because of the smoke from the erupting volcano combined with a thick fog which was pretty wild.

The next day we did get a nice view of Mt Etna from the Parco Maestranze in Catania and a cool view of the lava flow at night.

We also visited the WWII museum in Catania which had an incredible collection of weapons and archival photos from the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943.

And we wandered around the city taking pictures of all the beautiful buildings and eating gelato and the best cannolis ever.

It was a really great trip. Thanks to Rob for being a great tour guide and for giving us one more good reason to visit Sicily!
