Tofino

This weekend we took a trip out to Vancouver Island to visit Tofino. It was the first time I’ve driven onto a ferry (Chris actually driving), which was a cool experience, and it was a really pretty ride from Horseshoe Bay.

We’ve been talking about Tofino since January when we met a Canadian couple at White Sands National Monument. Tofino was their top recommendation for the Vancouver area and I think they were right! The beach landscape is magical, with rain forests and mountains that go right down into the ocean. We camped at a great spot on Mackenzie Beach and had a beautiful sunset on our first night.

The next morning we did a very cool hike up to the lookout at Cox Bay.

We did another cool hike on Saturday to the site of a WWII era bomber that crashed in 1945. The plane went down because of an engine malfunction, but all 12 crew members survived the crash and were rescued the next day.

The weather didn’t really cooperate for our last day but we did finally get to see some wildlife! There was a whale and sea lions jumping in the surf right off the coast at the end of the Wild Pacific Trail in Ucluelet.

We had a little time kill before boarding the ferry back home at Nanaimo and also saw some otters as we were walking along the harbor front!

  1. Looks spectacular,  so odd they are asking me to log in again to post a comment.  I usually just post a comment.  Don’t really know why the reply format keeps changing.   Anyway pics are great despite the rainy weather.   Last week in the news, a young girl was snatched by a sea otter from a dock.  Mom got her back.

  3. Well after reading Sandy comment, glad Vanessa didn’t get snatched. The place looks beautiful. I’m glad you didn’t let rain slow you down.
