Crater Lake

This weekend we visited Crater Lake.

We had gorgeous weather for our first hike up Garfield Peak. The trail begins in a meadow where a doe and fawn crossed our path and we also saw chipmunks and a chubby marmot (not pictured). There were beautiful views of the surrounding countryside on the way up too and the west rim was perfectly reflected in the glassy calm water around Wizard Island. At the top we also had a great view of the Phantom Ship rock below.

In the afternoon we made our way to the other side of the caldera and hiked down to the lake at Cleetwood Cove. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States at over 1,900 feet and the melted snow water was incredibly cold. I was only brave enough to dip my feet in but plenty of people were actually swimming!

We had a great campsite for the weekend too with a beautiful view of Mt Thielsen behind Diamond Lake. We saw a bear on our way to Crater Lake on Saturday and Chris got some beautiful shots of the sunrise our last morning.

We only have two more weeks left in Oregon and then it’s off to Vancouver!
