Mermaids, Mountains and Madame Moustache

We got this weekend off to a great start by visiting Sip n’ Dip, a local tiki bar with real, live mermaids! Chris approves.

Next we headed to Fort Benton the “oldest continuously inhabited settlement in Montana”. We visited the old fort and learned the history of the town’s gunslingers including the impressive Madame Moustache.

For lunch we visited the Grand Union hotel which has been restored to look almost exactly as it did 100 years ago. We ate lunch on the patio overlooking the Missouri River and even saw a couple of circling bald eagles (sorry no picture of that!).

We also visited the Museum of the Northern Great Plains in Fort Benton which has a ton of artifacts from the original homesteaders and a massive collection of agricultural tools and equipment from the last 100+ years. They also have a family of bison which was originally mounted at the Smithsonian as part of William T. Hornaday’s campaign to save the American Buffalo from extinction.

We went on a couple of great hikes this weekend too up to Memorial Falls

and Sluice Boxes State Park. Then we ate a giant plate of nachos (sorry not pictured!). Another great weekend!

  1. Hello, OKay that’s just weird a tiki bar with Mermaids in MT. I guess they need something besides gunslingers in their attractions. I need a full pic of madame Moustache, she kind of cut off there in that photo. Does give you a sense of wild west and what it took to get across the country. We are such wimps comparatively. You guys really know how to “pack” it all in. No pun intended. hahaha
